The Story of Shchedryk
Composed in 1914 by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovytch, "Shchedryk" (Щедрик) is based on a traditional Ukrainian folk chant sung during the winter solstice celebration of Shchedry Vechir (Generous Eve), the night before the Ukrainian New Year.
The original text tells the story of a little swallow (shchedrivka) who flies into a household to sing of the wealth that will come with the new year. Leontovytch's choral arrangement premiered in 1916 at Kyiv University and quickly became one of Ukraine's most recognizable musical exports.
From Shchedryk to Carol of the Bells
In 1936, American composer Peter Wilhousky adapted the melody with English lyrics, transforming it into "Carol of the Bells": the version known worldwide today. While the English version is associated with Christmas, the original Ukrainian Shchedryk remains a New Year's song, deeply rooted in pre-Christian winter solstice traditions.
